Reading is fundamental: AJ's Summer Reading List

Miscellaneous
Recently, while I was reading and enjoying Atlas Shrugged (by Ayn Rand), I came across a list of books somebody suggested everybody read. Unfortunately I have forgotten where I saw it... But, I took his list, massaged it a little, and came up with my own.

Here is a list of the next 10 books coming up from my list:

Title Author
The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli
Slaughter-house Five Kurt Vonnegut
1984 George Orwell
The Republic of Plato: Second Edition Plato
The Brotherrs Karamazov Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger
The Wealth Of Nations Adam Smith
For Whom the Bell Tolls Ernest Hemingway
The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde

Had to read the Republic three times in college. It is worth reading more than once. I also recommend Aristotle's Politics. It's amazing how accurate their philosophy of politics was 2000 years ago.

I also really liked 1984 and Dorian Gray.

As a former architect, I've always been partial to _The Fountainhead_, but _Atlas Shrugged_ was certainly a more comprehensive statement of her philosophy. A few too many diatribes for my tastes (esp. Galt's speech), but still a great read.

A couple of really good ones in there. _The Great Gatsby_ is one of my all-time favorites. I'm surprised you didn't have to read these in high school.

I did have to read many of them, which is the sole reason I didn't take the opportunity to enjoy them.

I have this whole issue with authority and people telling me what I have to do :)

I studied Orwells 1984 at school but never took much of it in. I finished reading it again back in April, what a book!

I finished Animal Farm a couple of weeks ago which is another Orwell classic.
