Ubuntu based Linspire signs Microsoft deal

Linux

Linspire Inc. has signed a deal with Microsoft.  What is the world coming to?  The article seems to be making the situation a little more amiable that I think it probably really is.  First Novell then Xandros...Microsoft is on the hunt, which distro/company is going next?

From the article on Yahoo.com:

"Under the agreement, Linspire will license Microsoft code related to Voice over Internet Protocol, Windows Media files and TrueType fonts. With the addition of the Microsoft code to Linspire's operating system, users will be able to voice-chat with Windows Live Messenger buddies, watch Windows Media video and audio files on open-source media players, and view and create documents using familiar typefaces.

Linspire also agreed to set Microsoft's Web search engine as the default on PCs that run its operating system."

I think this is great news! If Microsoft is willing to share stuff with Linux why isn't that great. We can't pretend that Microsoft or Windows do not exist. Linux is still for mostly geeks so if partnering with MS would make it more usable and popular, by all means, let's do it.

Nothing to worry about in my opinion. I think Microsoft is screwing up by making these deals and that it is going to backfire on them. These Linux companies would hardly sell themselves is there wasn't anything in it for them. At the end of the day it is more Linux for everyone and a slightly bigger crack in Microsoft's dominance.

There are some bigger irons in the fire on this patent infringment crusade. The Linspire thing isn't really all that surprising honestly, sounds like they were blatantly including Microsoft fonts (for example).

Like, the whole claim by Microsoft that the Samba project is stolen code. (The Samba team is responsible for software that enables Linux systems to use and provide Windows-compatible file and print servers.)

I'm glad to see Ubuntu taking a stand.

I agree with you, Aaron. Of course, Shuttleworth has enough $$ to make a legal fight very difficult on Microsoft, should it come to that.
