Does ColdFusion stack up?

ColdFusion

Lately, there has been quite a bit of discussion on our local CFUG mailing list regarding ColdFusion's ability to "hang" with other technologies in large scale operations. (Interestingly enough, the major proponents of non-ColdFusion languages, were no longer ColdFusion programmers.)

In order to make sure I could form an objective opinion, I decided to do my own scientific research. What I discovered may shock you.

Vindication?

I think it makes sense that the more efficient language should show up less. With all the code that .NET requires to do the things that ColdFusion can do in a few lines, I would be horrified if ColdFusion showed up even nearly as many times as .NET :)

Since we're talking web application development here we left out PHP, Rails, JSP etc. I like to use Google's file type operator with a common word for this kind of fight "filetype:cfm site". Now just replace the "cfm" with "php" or "aspx" or "asp" etc. This would indicate how many web sites are actively using a particular dev platform. It also reveals alot about the profiles of the types organizations that are using each language.

Another valid comment. I will be sure to factor in that method in my next round of very-scientific-researchenation.

Mitch, I'm not sure about that. It was really intended to be more tongue-in-cheek than anything. I am guessing googlefights.com just does a google search on both terms and uses the number of results in the fight. You could google ".Net" and see what comes back.
