Are you running out of code?

Musings

I was thinking...there are limits to everything. We have a limited number of heart beats in this life, and it follows that we have a limited number of key-strokes.

I am lucky that I have such an understanding wife who doesn't gripe, too much, about how fanatical I am about programming the “fun stuff” (InstantSpot mainly, but any work that is for my own company!). I also count myself lucky to be dedicated to full-time new development while we (at the day job) have all the bug-fixing responsibilities owned by other developers.

-Is programming just a job to you?
-Do you care that you are running out of time to write that next great app?
-If you do care, are you stuck bug-fixing all day instead of creating?

Maybe I am just in a weird mood...who knows. But, I think web application development is fun.

Heck yeah web development is fun! I freakin' love this stuff. I wish I had like 6 more hours in the day to get it all down on paper (code that is). Unfortunately, I am not getting to do new development all the time. Fortunately I am relatively young and don't need too much sleep - I get to work about 2 hours early to have "Ben Time". This is where I work on my own site and general research. For every hurdle that I overcome in code I find myself asking 10 more questions. I like watching the land of programming possibilities spread out wide before me and am frustrated only by the fact that I can't get through all of it faster.

Aaron,
Thanks for the post! I too love to program and I too have a very very understanding wife. Lately I've been finding it very hard to do everything that I want to do. It is such a good time to be a Programmer these days it's unreal. The are so many things to learn and do, Spry, CFSpry, ajaxCFC, mach-ii, Reactor, jQuery. The list goes on and on!!! Where does a guy with a full time job find the time to play??

Yeah web development is fun, but not as much fun as going out and getting laid. Like Ben, i was young was too and in that state of mind where I wanted to write and code every application that came into my head. Something weird happened though, I GREW UP! I realized that a job is a job no matter how much you enjoy it. I also found out that as much as I loved to code, I loved going to the movies, out with my friends and being with my family even more.

Plus the main fact is that even though web development is pays pretty well, you can make a lot more money in less time doing other things, like stock trading and real estate investments. So as I got older I started to devote less and less time in front of the computer to web development and more time to investments.

Bottom line is that you are correct that you have a limited time on this planet. Is anyone really going to remember or care 5 years after your death that you wrote Model-Glue, Reactor, BlogCFC or any other CF project, of course not. But your family and friends will always remember the times they had with you decades after you're gone.

So get off the keyboard, grab that girl of your's and get the hell out of the house or into the bedroom. :)

Tony, valid point on getting out and doing stuff. I certainly need to get out an go Hiking. I have done that in months and months. I'm certainly slacking on watching movies too... and i LOVE movies. But I think that's what makes it even more frustrating - that its not just coding that I love, that I love life in general and there just doesn't seem to be enough time to fit in everything :(

Tony, there is so much truth to your comment. I struggle with finding a balance between work and family. All the hard work affords my family the things we need/want, but it doesn't buy any extra quality time. In addition, it is a reality that the technologies surrounding web application development are progressing at a rapid pace...it feels like a race we must run in order to stay relevant.
